  • Description

The Big One returns on Labour weekend (NZ) 2014 . The Magellan Whaka 100 is 100km of riding over a course that is predominantly single track. There is nothing else like it in the Southern Hemisphere.

The challenge was laid down in Zippy Central Cafe at the start of 2007 – ‘Dean, you should really run a 100km race’ – and the response was given back with interest, with the design of the course arguably the toughest mountain bike marathon in New Zealand.

This is the seventh year of the event and it has garnered a reputation throughout New Zealand as being a fantastic achievement to complete. There are three courses offered: 25km, 50km and 100km. Plus a teams event with a 60km/40km split.

Regardless of what course you decide to race one thing is guaranteed: you will be racing in the best mountain bike venue in New Zealand. Forest roads, views and sweet single track set this event off from anything else on the race calendar.

Challenge yourself through some of the best singletrack trails in the world.

  • Getting There

etting to Rotorua has never been easier, especially from Australia. Rotorua has two direct flights per week between Rotorua and Sydney which brings you straight into the city. If you plan well enough you can probably put your bike together at the airport and then bike into town!

Otherwise, there are daily flights in and out of Auckland. Rotorua is then a three hour drive from Auckland meaning all your travel can be done in one day - leaving more time for riding!
