The not-so-minor details

Specialized Women’s Rumor Comp

Specialized Australia

‘The rumors are true,’ says the marketing team from Specialized – a pun that was asking to be made, given the name of the company’s latest offering in its women’s line of bikes. We’re about to snap our cleats into the Rumor Comp – a playful-looking rig designed to inspire more women to get out on knobbly tyres and explore the trails with confidence. This 29" trail bike is aimed at active women who are curious about giving mountain biking a go. It goes without saying that it’s decked out and designed to suit female body proportions. The price point, spec and geometry of the Rumor support this too. It has a nice low stand-over height, a tight wheelbase (so it doesn’t feel like a truck), reliable yet cost-effective moving parts from SRAM and RockShox and the white and purple graphics that are feminine without being cringy. We see a lot of new riders choosing four to five-inch travel bikes as they get into the sport. It’s the obvious choice for improving confidence, comfort and handling when exploring daunting-looking singletrack for the first time. We’re looking forward to seeing what a balanced women’s design adds in this area – not only in terms of handling, but in helping riders get a bike that suits their body shape and riding style before they know the ins and outs of the accessories and component choices that are available to help them to customise the bike they have. Given that we’re testing the race-ready Specialized S-Works Fate 29 at the moment, we have two other questions for the Rumor: How does some of the research motivated by high-level women’s racing trickle down to other bikes in the Specialized line-up? And, given the rise of gravity enduro racing and the technical women’s trail market, how might we expect the current Rumor line to grow to meet the demands of these riders as well. We’re looking forward to several hot dates with the Rumor, on some of our favourite, technical loops, on the quest to discovering more. Keep your eyes on Flow for the results.
