Lake Mountain

Destination overview

Lake Mountain is the closest alpine resort to Melbourne, and is where many Victorians experience snow for the first time. Best known to mountain bikers for the 28km Cascades trail, the ski field has a modest trail network near the summit, but has big expansion plans in the works — including a pump track and more gravity-fed descending trails.

The Cascades trail starts at the resort and snakes its way down the mountain to the town of Marysville below, boasting about 1550m of descending and 500m of climbing — so don’t forget your pedalling legs.

Alpine shuttles nine months of the year

Lake Mountain operates its own shuttles for Cascades, and depending on the snowpack, can run uplifts for 9-months of the year. The lower half of the 28km adventure trail usually opens in late September.

Lake Mountain is also the Victorian hub for Breaking the Boundary, a not-for-profit that advocates for adaptive mountain bikers and the resort will be expanding its handcycle options.

Ride, hike and fish the Victorian High Country

Beyond just mountain biking, this is the doorstep of the Victorian Alpine, so there is plenty of hiking and fly fishing on offer.

While you can camp at the resort and there is a cafe at the summit, all of the shops, restaurants and accommodation are in Marysville.
