Destination overview
With a sprawling network of XC trails, big backcountry adventures and high octane gravity descending, the Mount Buller mountain bike trails are a place close to the heart of Team Flow, having hosted many a Ride High Country Test Sessions. Buller has also just completed a massive revamped of it’s entire network, breathing new life into much-loved trails.
Ride at the ski field
The gravity trails at Buller are historic and follow the ski runs inside the resort. Trailscapes spent time working to improve drainage and update them for modern bikes. Some of the big rock features, like on Outlaw, now have a bit more width to help you carry speed.
But, the real adventure begins when you pedal beyond the resort boundary.
Iconic trails like Misty Twist, Stonefly and Medusa are set among the ghosts of gum trees burned in the 2006 fires, their skeletons contrasted against the vibrant green moss and dark brown loamy dirt. After Contour Works worked its magic on the XC trails, Trigger Happy is now a wall-to-wall bermy descent, and Clancy’s has had a change of direction — these are basically brand-new trails but on the same alignment.
The Delatite River Trail has also had a glow up, with big berms it’s a bit like a NASCAR track, and you can go EVEN faster than before. The lower half traces the river back to Mirimbah, with felled trees serving as bridges over the rushing water. Here you can slow down and enjoy your surroundings.
Home of the Alpine Epic
Buller is also the home of Australia’s first IMBA Epic trail. The 40km Alpine Epic starts at the resort and takes riders across to Mount Stirling, over Razorback Spur and caps the ride off with a mind-blowing descent.
Being that this is a ski resort, there are plenty of places to eat, stay and drink around the base area. Mansfield is the closest town to Buller, and you’ll want to stock up on essentials as you pass through.
Also, being a ski resort, the trails are closed during the winter, and the riding season typically runs from December to April.

Providing a true alpine riding experience on Melbourne’s doorstep, Mt. Buller certainly provides the elevation needed for some long & grin-inducing descents. The gruelling Epic trail provides one hell of a challenge to complete the entire loop (especially on anything other than an e-bike), however the views are well worth the suffering.
