Nitmiluk National Park/Katherine Gorge

Destination overview

Nitmiluk National Park is where you’ll find the infamous Nitmiluk/Katherine Gorge and a new trail network constructed by Ground Creations and the Jawoyn Traditional Owners.

Ride the gorge

Situated on top of an extensive rock plateau, the 20km network of primarily blues and greens contours along the bends and folds of the landscape; however, the signature ride jumps over the edge, and down into the gorge system. This rocky descent deposits you at one of the major river junctions for boat tours — so you could ride down and rent a canoe or jump on a ferry tour.

Located about 30km from Katherine, this part of the Northern Territory experiences monsoons from the top end and the heat of Central Australia. Wet seasons stretch from November to April, and given how steamy the Northern Territory can get during the summer months, mid-winter will be prime time for a visit.

Way out there

There is not much out there in the way of services or mobile reception, so come prepared and steer clear of the spear grass.

About three hours from Darwin, Katherine can look a little rough around the edges, but it’s a quirky little place, with a growing foodie scene. Be sure to check out the Katherine Hotsprings.
