One of only a few legal riding spots in Sydney is Old Man’s Valley, which is situated not far from the main drag of Hornsby. In the first 18 months after the trails opened, the Council registered 33,000 laps of this compact park. It was closed for a short period as the Quarry next door was nominated as the repository for untold tonnes of dirt and rubble excavated as part of the North Connex tunnel project in Sydney’s north.
However, once the stream of fully loaded dump trucks dried up, the trails re-opened with a new lease on life and even more singletrack.
Old Man’s Valley is one of the few places in Sydney that is largely rock free, and there is plenty of flowing singletrack for riders of all levels to build confidence.
However, if you are looking to do some rock crawling, there are a pair of black-rated trails weaving through gigantic boulders and sprinkled with more challenging features.
Midway down the valley, there are multiple lines of dirt jumps for riders to work on their air awareness, whips, and bar turns.
For only having about 7km of singletrack, Old Man’s Valley packs in an impressive variety of trails.
The park can be accessed from Quarry Road, with plenty of car spaces if you’re driving, or via Hornsby Park behind the pool. There are ongoing works around the park, and with plenty of clay, sections of the network may be closed. The most up-to-date information can be found on the Hornsby MBT Twitter.
