When it comes to flat pedals for mountain biking, Funn offers three different options. The cheapest model is called the Black Magic that uses a composite body and sells for $89.95 AUD for the pair. Then there’s the Funndamental flat pedal that uses a CNC machined alloy body and retails for $159.95 AUD for the pair. At the top of the tree is this pedal; the brand new Funn Python V2.

The Funn Python V2 is the brand’s premium flat pedal option. Compared to the cheaper Funndamental, the Python V2 utilises a forged AL6061 alloy body instead of a machined one. Forging has the ability to create a stronger metal structure, which is a good idea for a component like a pedal that’s likely to see a lot of abuse. It can also be used to produce nice smooth edges, which helps to give the Python V2 its distinctive shape.
Pulling these pedals out of the packet, the first thing that struck us was their thin profile that measures 10.5mm at its most slender point. There’s a smidge of concavity with a slightly thicker platform at the front and rear of the pedal body, though you’ll also spot a bulge around the axle. It’s not been an issue for our testers, though this may bother riders with more sensitive feet and shoes with flexier soles.
The platform itself measures 110x103mm, and it features 11 threaded pins per side. The Funn Python V2 is available in a range of anodised colours including red, blue, green, orange and turquoise for those who like a splash of colour on their mountain bike. Replacement pins can also be had in a variety of colours, leading to some cool options for customising the look.
We like the textured profile that provides more bite as each pin presses into the sole of your shoe, and they’re easy to remove with a socket tool even if the end of the pin gets damaged.
The Funn Python V2 features chromoly spindles that are supported with a cartridge bearing and full-length bushing axle system. Long-term durability is yet to be determined, but so far we’ve been impressed with their overall grip, thin platform and smooth looks.
