What’s new at Thredbo this summer?

Thredbo Mountain Resort has operated as an MTB destination for nearly 35 years, and are all too aware that development and investment are key to staying ahead of the game.

With this in mind, the team have been hustling to bring various new trails and attractions online and have a stacked calendar of vibey summer events kicking off in December. We spoke to Mountain Events Manager and certified legend Tim Windshuttle from Thredbo for the lowdown on what’s new for this summer.

Thredbo is going to look a little different this summer, here’s what you can expect.

New trails in the Resort for the 24/25 season

Straight down to brass tacks, we wanted to know exactly what Thredbo is adding in terms of fresh trail, and we think the Thredbo faithful will be very pleased indeed. The team are working on the brand new Revolver trail — accessed via the Kosciuszko Chairlift and a fresh option for that part of the hill, with some steep flow on offer.

“It carves through dense snow gums and utilises the area’s natural terrain,” explained Windshuttle. “It’s designed for a smooth fall-line riding experience which minimises braking and maximises on flow,” he says.

We’re told this track will feature steep fluid berms, rollers, rock features, and some intermediate jumps — plenty of new turns for Jack Moir to blow up, then. But that’s not all the trail crew has been digging.

The team at Thredbo have been busy, and there are plenty of new trails in the works for this summer, along with a fresh take on some old favourites.

“We’ve got two new hero jump trails in the works, one of which starts at the hill’s Intermediate Cruiser area,” Windshuttle explained. “And another which will replace the alignment of the old alpine bobsled.”

Both trails are under construction now, all pointing to a renewed focus on rider airtime.

Also in the works is a jump line situated in the Resort’s playground area accessed via the Cruiser and Gunbarrel chairlifts. The terrain in the zone is well-tailored for intermediate hits and gentler slopes, in contrast to some of the zones throughout the Resort. Expect tabletops and hip options with a strong focus on rider progression.

Windshuttle explained there’s also a freshie for the newbies.

“Rockpool is a 1.5km beginner flow trail, which was one part of the cross-country network, and it’s designed to be a fun introduction to flowing turns while keeping younger riders off the main road for added safety,” he says.

Born Again Favourites

The All Mountain trail has received a re-brand; now separated into three distinctly named sections of trail.

Panorama sits at the top of the Gunbarrel Chairlift, offering access to the highest traverse at 1930m and insane valley views out to Jindabyne. This one is graded black with techy climbs, rock rolls and chutes thrown in the mix.

The All Mountain Trail is now divided up into three named trails and has had a big revamp.

This feeds into Pegasus, an intermediate flow trail for brakes-off pinning and grinning.

Lastly, the trail transitions onto Dream Catcher, an intermediate tech-flow trail with rugged sections and fast-flowing turns.

The Lower Kosciuszko Flow Trail will also look a little different than last season. There is a brand new section that replaces the old-school open traverse with a wooded passage of flowing singletrack brimming with rollers and small jump options.

Dividing things up like this makes it much easier to work out where you are on the hill.

Exciting Developments

Beyond the trails themselves, Windshuttle explains some of the wider developments around the Resort.

“The Bike School will offer Gravity Groms two-day clinics for mini rippers, as well as the usual Gravity Girls and daily lessons” he says.

Thredbo is expanding its Bike School to get those mini-shredders ripping.

There’s also a brand-spankin’ new premium demo fleet for the 2024/25 season. The lineup will feature some frankly tasty Norco Sight C2s ready to rip the Snowy Mountains. This is in addition to the substantial rental fleet Thredbo maintains with everything from full-on DH rigs to hardtails and kids bikes.

Outside of the riding itself, Thredbo is also now home to its very own Alpine Coaster, replacing the well-loved bobsled. This is a new family-friendly drawcard that will be open year-round. It’s a lengthy 1.5km and allows riders to reach up to 40kmph — or for a more chill experience, there are complimentary brakes. Picture yourself zoomin’ metres above the crisp white snow on a winter’s afternoon or sailing through the snow gums with the warm summer breeze in your hair, chased down by your over-excited family.

The Alpine Coaster is all new for this summer, replacing the much loved bobsled.

Merry Festivus, let’s party at Thredbo

But what about the very serious business of partying for the 24/25 season?

Expect a packed roster of events, including the Thredbo Village Carnival, Kids Adventure Festival, Summer Music Series, a Beer, Food and Wine Festival and loads more. Of course, the Cannonball Festival, a juggernaut with a packed schedule of racing and entertainment, will be celebrating its 11th year. We’ll cover this in greater detail closer to the event, which runs February 10-15, 2025.

If that doesn’t get you excited, then we don’t know what to tell ya, folks. Check out the Thredbo website for all the dates and information you could possibly need.

Cannonball is always a highlight of the summer. Last year was the tenth anniversary of the festival, and you can rest assured that Thredbo is going to get bigger and better in 2025.
