Destination overview
Eagle Mountain Bike Park lays claim to being Australia’s first mountain bike park. On the doorstep of Adelaide, it has played host to many an XC National Championships in its day, and an Enduro National titles too, pitting riders against rough and rocky terrain.
Ride the Eagle Bowl
Built on an abandoned quarry site lovingly called the Eagle Bowl, don’t forget your climbing legs, because you’ll need them here. Eagle is mostly steep, rocky, and loose XC trails, but there are a few gravity runs like The Mixer, On the Verge, and there is even a 4X course.
The top of the network offers sweeping views over the city before diving down into the trees. The trailhead does have a rainwater tank, but there is no mains water or toilets; it gets pretty steamy in Adelaide over the summer months, so come prepared.
Trails overlooking the city
Only about 12km from the Adelaide Central Market, the Eagle Mountain Bike Park is accessible by public transport or a short pedal, and makes up one part of a larger network of formal and informal trails in the Mount Lofty Ranges.
The park is not open on Christmas Day and is subject to closures during extreme weather and high fire danger in the Mount Lofty Ranges — for the most up to date info check the South Australian Country Fire Service website.
With its proximity to Adelaide, there is so much to do and see we couldn’t possibly fit it all in here. If you’re a total cycling fanatic, the Tour Down Under comes to Adelaide every January, and one of the stages often passes right through Mount Lofty.
