Narooma

Destination overview

One of three new destinations on the NSW South Coast, the Narooma mountain bike trails are the result of some highly motivated locals. What started as 30km of community-built trails in Bodalla State Forest has evolved to nearly 100km, with the majority of that constructed by the soil wizards at Dirt Art.

Narooma | Five zones, five times the fun

The Narooma mountain bike trail network has been divided into five zones, each catering to a specific riding style.

The Playground (initially called the Skills Zone) is closest to the trailhead, and is designed to help beginner mountain bikers grow their skills. The next step up is The Northern Zone, which is a pocket of intermediate descended trails, flaked on all sides by climbing trails. Both of these zones can be accessed by shuttles, meaning riders who may not otherwise have access can experience the joy of an uplift.

The Gravity Zone is…well…gravity trails. Built into a section of the forest that had been previously logged, Dirt Art was able to move a lot of dirt to create substantial features.

The Wilderness Zone, on the other hand, is all narrow and natural trails; this zone can be accessed from the top shuttle dropoff and has blue and black trails arranged in a stacked loop format so rides can be tailored to how much gas you have in the tank.

Last but not least is the Trail Riding Zone, which is an extension of the original trail network, built in a style to reflect the OG handbuilt trails.

This network runs the gamut from massive jumps to janky tech. and some oddball trail features like a burnt-out ute you can jump.

Don’t forget about the beach

But its more than just trails, Narooma is already a tourist destination because the beaches are spec-freakin-tacular! If you make the trip down here, don’t forget your swimmers and surfboard.

  1. In February we headed to Narooma after hearing much hype about the trails.
Our first day of riding we spent on the Playground testing all the easier flow trails, with a super nice climbing track back to the top. Thunderbirds are go being the favorite trail.
Day 2 we booked in for half day shuttles and tested all of the Gravity Trails! And all of them over again. There’s something for everyone here, flow, jumps, tech, climbs.
All nestled into a beautiful part of the South Coast.

  2. My mate & I took the road south to Narooma earlier this year & were not disappointed. We explored all of the different areas and found fun trails in all areas. The mix of hand built and machine built trails are awesome. I Love Steve & Hump Back in the Gravity zone were full of flow! We didn’t use shuttles and the climb of No Soup For You is well made and an enjoyable climb. We headed to the Wilderness Area for some classic hand built trails and found the fun trail of Willy Wossell which felt like it just kept on going. Master of my Domain is another well built climb to the playground and Thunderbirds are go is a machine built trail with jumps and berms, flowing all the way back to the trail head. Definitely worth the trip to Narooma & will definitely be back!

  3. Narooma is the best laid out and most fun trail network on mainland Australia. Every corner is perfectly placed and there are jumps for all abilities. A really great place to ride for families with smooth trails, gentle climbs that aren’t too long and you can self shuttle the Playground area (Thunderbirds are Go and Shredtopia). Commercial shuttles available for the 8 descents at the Gravity Zone with Southbound Escapes.

There are some tech trails as well, although only Devils Ballzac has substantial rock features (but it has a lot!)

Consider staying in Dalmeny – it’s closer to the trail head (possible to ride out to the Wilderness Zone) and a is a cute little town with a great beach.

  4. Spent a couple of days riding Narooma trails recently and thought it was impressive for the total number of different trail types but also how well kept they are! Coming from Sydney and riding mostly RNP with only 10k of official trails in Narooma you are spoilt for choice with beginners, gravity and cross country trails abound. Not sure we got through all of them there are so many but we will be back.
    Trail head is impressive too!

  5. With the old trails, new skills area at the carpark, the other 3 main areas, Gravity, Playground and Wilderness, this place has almost everything, from janky black and old schools XC and gravity, to flow, and jump tracks, this area has so much to offer. All in the top end of tracks.
If you have not ridden this, you should.
Now with Eden, Tathra, Narooma, and all the Mogo trails being built, this area will be alive with mountain bikes.
