Destination overview
The riding in Yackandandah is wonderfully straightforward. You don’t need a shuttle pass or a Trailforks membership to find your way, nor do you need to scare yourself, or be as fit as Bec McConnell to enjoy the Yack Tracks.
Ride the Yack Tracks
The Yack Tracks are an outlier in the Victorian High Country; seemingly endless XC trails play with the remains of the gold mining era. One minute you’re zipping up an old water race and then trying to thread the needle through a clay canyon, bearing the scars of pickaxes and spades.
The trails here are tame enough they won’t scare a newcomer into never wanting to ride again, but have enough pizzazz to keep experienced riders entertained when you inject speed into the equation.
Better still, the Yack Tracks offer the real, ‘rock-up-and-ride’ experience. The board at the trailhead has all the info you need, and detailed signage keeps the good times rolling without the need for GPS or pre-downloaded maps.
Yack eats, drinks and stays
The main street of town is lined with old trees and encased in a tunnel of green. There’s excellent food and cafes, the vibe is totally relaxed, and all the shops have a bit of personality — it’s a great escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Less than half an hour away from Beechworth, the two towns are now connected by the Indigo Epic trail. Serving as the first year-round Epic trail in Australia, it’s one of the best days out we’ve every had.

The Indigo Epic trail is a great ride, start from Yack end to get the main climbing over early and enjoy the excellent Yack descent at the end, guaranteed to raise a smile.
Yackandandah Epic Trails, I have been there twice in the past year on both a cross country bike and a trail bike and loved every minute of it. The trails are perfectly formed and provide fun for any level of ability and bike. They are exceptionally well maintained, which is a credit to the local trail crew. The local town offers great options for beverages, food and accommodation after you finish riding with a huge smile on your face from the awesome fun had. I will definitely be back there again soon.
Riding in Yackandandah feels like you’ve gone back in time. The tight, hand cut trails, some of which pass through old mining relics, provides a genuine sense of awe & wonder. There’s so many trails here, that you could easily spend at least 2 days here & not ride the same trail twice. Whilst in the area though, it’d be rude to not ride the sensational Indigo Epic, with its helical loops making it easy to ride from multiple locations on the trail.
