Correct Chris... during my time on the MTBA executive, I was privy to a number of these type of conversations... my contention then as it is now, is that XCO is so stacked towards euros, that until an athlete has been over there for more than a couple of years... until their UCI ranking allows them to start somewhere near the front, that until these athletes don't have to go broke just trying to see out a 3 year stint... that they simply cannot compete. XCO racing is just so difficult to get near the front if you are starting at 60th on the grid... Bec and Dan have showed what some have always known... that Australian's do have the ability to be the best cyclists in the world... What this past weekend shows us is also that a "sniff" of winning can and does produce different results. I remember speaking with a certain aussie who went over to Europe for their first shot at WC racing... in 3 races they completed a grand total of 8 laps... because of the 80% rule. That rider certainly wasn't enthused to spend another $20K the next year.
Well done Chris for speaking out!
