Destination overview
The Margaret River region of Western Australia is probably best known for producing world-class wine. As it turns out, the same orange soil where these grapes flourish is pretty great for mountain bike trails too.
Home of the Cape to Cape
Each year Margaret River hosts the Cape to Cape MTB stage race. Just outside town, you’ll find a maze of trails in Wooditjup National Park, split by Carters Road. Formerly known as South Carters, The Creek Trails are pitched towards intermediate and advanced riders, with tricky rock gardens, granite outcrops and creek bed g-outs.
On the other side of Carters Road, you’ll find The Pines, the Wooditjup Trails/Compartment 10 and the Jedi Loop. Wooditjup is all about Flow, with massive orange berms and jumps carefully sculpted by the folks from Common Ground Trails. Right next door, The Pines has green, blue and blacks with everything from sweeping smooth corners, adaptive friendly trails, and rough and rooty descents, providing a satisfying contrast to its neighbour.
Nearby you’ll find the Ten Mile Brook Trail. Named for a brook that was dammed to create a new water source for town, it’s a mellow 15km (return) ride that follows an old timber tramway out to Ten Mile Brook Brook dam.
About 20-min north is Middle Earth. Constructed by a couple of local shredders, it’s a 25km blue circuit with turns, turns and more turns. It’s an XC loop, but it’s chockers with rock gardens, log rolls and opportunities to get some air beneath your tyres.
Margaret River views, brews and eats.
Margaret River is also known for its surfing, with Gnarabup Beach hosting a World Surfing League stop each year in late April. It can be pretty sharky and the waves get huge, but they make for great spectating.
Producing some of the world’s best red wines, Margaret River Mountain Bike Tours host guided wine, dine, and bike tours, or head over to Colonial Brewing or Margaret River Distilling for a different drop.
There’s also cave tours, paddle boarding, giant hedge mazes and more. We promise if you go to Margaret River, you won’t be bored.
